Roughriders' receiver Shawn Bane Jr. is ready — and waiting

Shawn Bane Jr. is itching to get back into the lineup. Article content After suffering a season-ending knee injury nearly 10 months ago, the Saskatchewan Roughriders third-year receiver has been a full participant in practice for the past two weeks but is still waiting to make his season debut. Article content Article content 'Back to the basics,' Bane said this week as the Roughriders get set to visit the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. 'Just trying to build up the body, literally. I got it broken down so completely rebuilt. Article content 'I feel good, feel strong, feel healthy.' On Sept. 28, 2024, the 30-year-old suffered a serious knee injury when he attempted to make a catch over the middle of the field against the Ottawa Redblacks. He underwent surgery on his partially torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and fully torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL). Article content Bane — who also tore his ACL in college — underwent months of rehab and recovery from the sideline as his team opened training camp and began the season without him on the field. Article content 'It was brutal, man. It was so brutal,' said the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Florida native. 'The last time I hurt my leg was in 2016 and I only had to watch my team go through the playoffs. Article content 'We had three weeks and then we won the championship. So I didn't have to watch them for a long time. But this is a whole different mindset of missing camp (and) missing the (start of the) season.' Article content Instead of being placed on the six-game injured list to start the year, Bane was put on the one-game injured list which allowed him to be available to practice at any time with the team. Article content Article content After doing individual drills on the sideline during practice for the first four weeks of the season, Bane returned to the field with his teammates in limited fashion in Week 6 before being fully cleared last week. Article content Article content Since then, he's enjoyed two productive weeks of practice, although he hasn't ran reps with the starting offence yet. Article content 'The last little bit (of recovery) was more mental than anything,' said Bane. 'But I think today really solidified the 100 per cent for me. Article content 'The final decision is up to the doctors, but I ran a full practice, full routes, stopping on a dime, feeling good.' Article content After signing in Saskatchewan in 2023 following two years with the Calgary Stampeders, Bane made 93 receptions for 1,104 yards and four touchdowns that year before recording 49 catches for 591 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games in 2024 prior to his injury. Article content With three American receivers off to strong starts this season in KeeSean Johnson, Dohnte Meyers and Joe Robustelli, there may have to be a tricky roster decision when it comes to Bane's return to the lineup.

Hacks star Jean Smart, 73, walks with a cane after knee surgery following a scary fall in NYC

Jean Smart was seen struggling as she walked with a cane in New York City on Tuesday morning. The 73-year-old Hacks actress had on a white-and-black striped blazer with a cream-colored camisole and white slacks with blue sneakers. There was a long blue ombre scarf over her yellow curlers as she added prescription glasses while wearing minimal makeup. Two handlers were with her to guide the acting stalwart to the sidewalk. This comes just a week after she revealed that she suffered a painful knee injury that kept her from her stage play for two weeks. Smart hurt herself on the 4th of July while walking around New York City with her sons. The Designing Woman star told People she 'went down like a ton of bricks' when she tripped over a 'hockey-puck-sized' base of a barrier on the ground, which she said, 'keep cars from cutting the corners too close, I think.' It is an apparently common occurrence in New York City. Smart explained, 'As I was sitting there in the street waiting for the ambulance, a guy came along and tripped over the same thing.' When she arrived at the small hospital which first treated her, Smart's assumption was conferred with the health worker told her, 'Oh, I, I know exactly what you're talking about. We get one a day.' The actress, who has been nominated for another Emmy for her role as comedienne Debra Vance in Hacks, has been wowing audiences in her one-woman show Call Me Izzy on Broadway. 'And that's in a tiny little hospital. I said, "Well, how come nobody's screaming bloody murder about it?"' Her conclusion was 'People in New York, they put up with a lot. They just kinda shrug and go, "Eh, what are you gonna do?"' The Big Mouth actress was later transferred to another hospital where a 'really wonderful surgeon' operated on her knee July 8, the same day the Call Me Izzy Instagram page announced her absence. The production joyfully announced Smart's return in its Instagram Stories on Tuesday. 'Tonight! Welcome Back Jean' was written over a promotional video for the show. The plan was for Smart to return to the stage wearing a leg brace. 'I won't be doing as much as I was physically, although it's a one-person show — it's not like I was doing big tap numbers and somersaulting across the stage,' she told the outlet. 'Some one-person shows they just sort of sit and talk. So hopefully the audience won't be disappointed. I don't think they will be. It's such an amazing story.' The plot follows Isabell, a Louisiana woman trapped in an abusive marriage. She hopes her gift for writing poetry might be her way out. Tony winner Johanna Day stepped in to cover for Smart during her medical leave. The actress will have to wear her knee-brace on stage, but hopes the audience will 'see it for two seconds, they won't notice it, and they'll just enjoy the story.' During a run-through ahead of Tuesday's performance Smart revealed having the brace added something new to her performance. 'It added an interesting element to the feeling of the character feeling trapped,' she explained. 'So that was kind of an interesting thing to notice,' Smart said of the experience. 'And because I can't really act from my head to my toes like I usually do, I almost felt like — because I'm now acting mostly from the waist up — it actually seemed to energize me vocally.' As she works to recover from her injury she admitted, 'I'm not sure what kind of strength I'll have in that leg, and bending will be a slow process, but hopefully by the time we close, I'll be skipping around.'

Doctor gives verdict on England hero Lucy Bronze's claim that she played whole of Lionesses' triumphant Euros with a 'broken leg'

A leading doctor has said it is 'remarkable' Lucy Bronze was able to play throughout Euro 2025 after the defender revealed she had battled through the tournament with a 'fractured tibia'. Bronze was a key member of Sariana Wiegman's victorious team throughout the competition. The 33-year-old right back played 598 minutes at the tournament, the fourth most in the England team, playing in each match. Bronze was substituted in the latter stages of two England group matches, but came through back-to-back 120 minute contests as the Lionesses went to extra-time in the quarters and semi-finals. She was forced off at half-time in extra time during Sunday's final, which ended 1-1 before England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties in Basel. But when asked about the new knee injury she picked up during the game, Bronze disclosed that she had already been playing through far worse. 'I have actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia,' she told BBC Sport. 'And then I have hurt my knee on my other leg. 'That's why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game, as I've been in a lot of pain. If that's what it takes to play for England, that's what I'll do. Very painful.' While confirming she had a fractured tibia, Bronze has not disclosed the full extent of the problem. Speaking to the BBC, Dr Mark Bowditch, President of the British Orthopaedic Association, said it was 'remarkable' Bronze had played so much at Euro 2025 due to the injury. Bowditch, a consultant knee and sports surgeon, suggested Bronze would likely have been playing with a stress fracture, which would likely have seen pain emerge after matches. 'Fractures of the tibia range from partial break, such as a stress or fatigue split, through to a complete break and separation,' Bowditch said. 'A complete break is the high-energy sudden injury from a fall from a height, twist or direct blow, such as a studs-up tackle. You cannot continue to play on or even walk on a complete break. 'Stress/fatigue fractures - which is likely to be the type Lucy Bronze has - are low-energy repeated injury and usually seen in athletes or army personnel. 'They normally present with pain after activity, rather than a sudden incident.' Bowditch suggested the England medical team would have had to adjust Bronze's training to enable her to remain on the pitch during the competition. 'She probably has had to reduce the amount of training she has done in between games or train in a low weight-bearing environment such as a swimming pool or anti-gravity trainer,' he added. 'It's a great tribute to Dr Ritan Mehta and Lionesses medical team that they have managed to keep Lucy going.' England boss Wiegman admitted they had attempted to manage Bronze's injury while at the tournament. Wiegman had brought off Bronze in the latter stages of group matches against the Netherlands and Wales, where England had held convincing leads to help book their place in the knock-out stage.

Plymouth Argyle summer signing Jack MacKenzie to miss start of season

Plymouth Argyle will be without left-back Jack MacKenzie for their League One season-opener against Barnsley at Home Park next Saturday due to a knee injury. The summer signing from 2024/25 Scottish FA Cup winners Aberdeen missed the final two warm-up matches, the 6-0 win away to Torquay United last Wednesday and the 2-0 defeat by Bristol City at Home Park today, after suffering from tendinitis. Brendan Galloway played at left-back for Argyle against Bristol City but he is a more recognised central defender, while Ayman Benarous took over that position as a substitute in the second half. READ MORE: New striker signing a Plymouth Argyle priority declares Tom Cleverley READ MORE: Plymouth Argyle struggle against Championship quality of Bristol City Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley said: "Not good news with Jack, unfortunately. He has got a tendinopathy that is sore, that will need a bit of time to settle down. "Not ideal with Jack coming to the club, he wants to show everyone what he can do. I can't put a specific timescale on that but it will be certainly weeks until that settles down. "It's a very common footballer injury and most of the time you can keep a lid on it, sometimes it just gets too aggressive and that's where it has got to for him and he just needs a period of time to settle that down." Cleverley continued: "He's a great lad and you know he will play through the pain barrier for you so it must be a little bit sore for him to flag it up. The tests have proved that and we need to be careful with him to make sure you are not in that vicious cycle of 'It feels a bit better this week, let's push' and then you are back to square one. "We will be careful with that one. He's a player we think a lot of and we look forward to having him back, but it certainly won't be for next week." One positive piece of news for Argyle was the return from a knee injury of defender Julio Pleguezuelo as a substitute against Bristol City after he was ruled out of the pre-season matches against Eintracht Braunschweig, Truro City and Torquay, as well as a full-scale inter-squad match at Home Park. Pleguezuelo replaced Kornel Szucs in the 67th minute against the Robins and Cleverley said: "That was always the plan, if we could get Pleggy to the last (pre-season) game and get some minutes into him. "Matty (Sorinola) came back from missing Wednesday (the win at Torquay), as did Caleb Watts, and those guys looked sharp and completed an hour, and will be available for selection for next week." Swans dealt Santos blow as Sheehan gives injury update

Swansea City centre-back Ricardo Santos will miss the beginning of the 2025-26 season because of a knee who joined the Swans from Bolton Wanderers earlier this summer, landed awkwardly during his side's pre-season loss to Cheltenham Town in midweek."We are without three centre-halves and two wingers at the moment," said Swansea City manager Alan Sheehan."Anyone who was at the Cheltenham game will know about Ricardo. He had a shocking landing, and he will be out for a while now as he hyperextended his leg."Like Santos, club captain Ben Cabango, Filip Lissah, Jisung Eom and Zeidane Inoussa all missed Swansea's 1-0 pre-season defeat by Exeter City on Saturday."Ben Cabango is incredibly important to us, and we are going to get him scanned again as he has a little something in his calf which we need to look further into," added Sheehan."Filip Lissah turned his ankle, the same as we had with Jisung, and Inoussa was left out as a precaution."
